_____Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the Internet's oldest, if not oldest, methods of real time communication. It uses a single computer (server) to connect users (clients) much the same as web browsers connecting to yahoo.com. Messages are sent by clients to the server and relayed to other clients. The message can be specific and sent to a a specific user, multiple users, and what is known as a channel, in which all those in the channel recieve the message. On IRC you get to pick a nick name that identifies yourself to other clients. As a client, you'll need to know some commands to get the server to set the nick name, to join channels, and configure other information and settings about yourself. Commands are prefixed with a forward-slash (/) telling the client to send a message as a command. Below is a basic list of some important commands. | ||||||||||||||||||
